    Week of Sept. 26, 2007

    This past week was filled with good games, good friends and good food as the 33rd annual Casey County Apple Festival transformed downtown Liberty into a hub of excitement and town pride. The festival, in one of its most successful years to date, drew visitors from out of town and out of state with some new events and contests as well as few old favorites.
    Eight people were indicted by a Casey County grand Jury in connection with the theft of building materials from Phillip Cochran in July.

    Brittany Lasley was crowned Miss Casey County 2007 at the high school gymnasium.
    It’s been a long time coming, but work is now under way on a sewer extension project that will bring city sewer services to about 140 Liberty residents and possibly another 25 more.

    Week of Sept. 12, 2007

    The fatal car accident that claimed the life of Joshua Monroe on his way to school last week left the Casey County High senior’s family, friends and community grieving over the loss. But it’s those people who were closest to Monroe who say his sense of humor, kind heart and determination will always stay with them.
    Local attorney Raymond Overstreet has filed suit against his former partners, alleging they have breached a contract and not fulfilled their agreement to buy his law practice.

    Week of Sept. 5, 2007

    A Casey County High School student was killed on his way to school Tuesday morning and his twin brother was injured. Josh Monroe, 19, was pronounced dead at the scene of the one-vehicle accident at 8:30 a.m., according to Deputy Coroner Betty Clark.

    Liberty recorded a season-high of 103 degrees.
    A Casey County school bus loaded with 25 students was involved in a collision in the eastern section of the county. While no one suffered serious injuries, at least one parent wants to know why she wasn’t notified of the accident.

    A Lincoln County car accident that took the lives of three members of a Liberty family left two Middleburg residents seriously injured. Fred E. Rodgers, 80; his wife, Lois, 80; and their son, Freddie, 58, all of Liberty, were pronounced dead at the scene on U.S. 127 just north of Hustonville.
    Depositions in the civil case involving five former Casey County High School students who filed suit against school officials last year came to a standstill recently as attorneys sought a judge’s ruling.

    At age 7, Abbie Streeval remembers watching in awe as Allison Elliott was named the 1997 Casey County Junior Miss. “I thought it would be so fun to stand on the stage and do that,” she said. Abbie said her mother told her, at the time, that she would get her chance. Abbie got that chance Saturday night, as she and four other Casey County High School seniors competed for the title of 2008 Casey County Junior Miss. And, on this night, the title belonged to Abbie.

    Casey County Fiscal Court isn’t happy with the tax rate the Casey County Public Library plans to levy for the coming tax year. In fact, magistrates plan to be at the library’s public hearing to make their displeasure known.
    Dr. Cassie Floyd, 29, joined the medical staff of Liberty Family Medical Center. She is the daughter of Ricky and Donna Floyd of Walltown and graduated from Casey County High School in 1996.

    The start of new school year is less than two weeks away as teachers are scheduled to report to their respective schools on Aug. 13, while the first days for students is Aug. 14. Walnut Hill Elementary School will open its doors to students who previously attended Douglas, Phelps and Phillips elementaries.

    The Rev. George Lewis McInnis III, previously known in Casey County as “Trey,” made a brief return to his hometown after being ordained June 2 as a Roman Catholic priest. He is the first Roman Catholic priest to be ordained from Casey County in more than 50 years.

    The body of a former Casey County man, Mark Sayers, 37, was recovered in Lake Cumberland after two weeks of searching, authorities say. He had been presumed drowned after a boating collision June 30.
    Employees of Tarter Tube raised a new flag in front of the business. Tarter Tube, located in southern Casey County on U.S. 127, hosted visitors from  Kentucky Farm Bureau’s Young Farmer Summer Outing, who toured the manufacturing mill.

    Marine Lance Cpl. Adam Ellison and Allen Weldon of U.S. Army, both of Liberty, raised the American flag during the Liberty Bell dedication program at Liberty Park on July 4. The flag, which once flew over Fallujah, Iraq, was brought to Liberty by Ellison.
    The state Transportation Cabinet Department of Highways filed a fifth lawsuit seeking condemnation of property needed in the construction of a new section of Ky. 70 west of Liberty.

    Week of July 4, 2007

    A 300-pound black bear was spotted eating blackberries near the Creston area of Ky. 70 West. It was one of three that caused quite a stir for residents. The bears were believed to be a mother and her cub along with another bear that wasn’t as big as the mother.
    Festivities for the Fourth of July celebration were set to light up downtown Liberty as well as the night sky over the Central Kentucky AG/EXPO Center with a grand fireworks show.

    With hundreds of friends and family members behind them, Jerry Tucker and his 37 children said goodbye on Monday to their wife and mother who spent her life caring for the world’s children. Services were held this week at the Galilean Home Youth Center for Sandy Tucker, 62, who co-founded the home with Jerry, her husband.
    From a deficit of about $400,000 to a surplus exceeding $500,000, the Casey County Detention Center has done about a $1 million turnaround since it opened five years ago.

    Sandy Tucker, who co-founded Galilean Ministries with her husband, Jerry, lost her battle with cancer. Tucker, 62, died at St. Joseph Hospital East in Lexington.
    Steven Garrett, 26, was named Liberty police chief following the death of Chief Ron Whited.

    Week of June 13, 2007

    A man who left an impact on many people died after a 20-year battle with cancer. Liberty Police Chief Ron Whited died June 5 at the Veterans Administration medical center in Lexington where he had been hospitalized for about three weeks. His death left a hole in the police department and the community he served for nearly 22 years. “We are terribly sad at Ron’s passing. He was a good friend to all our city family and we’ll miss him very much,” Mayor Steve Sweeney said.

    A Dunnville woman who drove her car into Dairy Mart in January, seriously injuring a teenager, has been indicted on assault and other charges.

    Residents were urged to conserve water. Andy Greynolds, manager of East Casey County Water District, said the county is still in “bad shape.”

    The removal of the defective brick on Jones Park Elementary School began by crews with D.W. Wilburn Inc., the general contractor on the project.

    The Casey County Board of Education approved pay raises for personnel in 2007-08. Certified employees will receive a $3,000 raise. Classified employees will receive a 5-percent increase.
    The Casey County Alumni Association named Jane Rodgers Douglas and Steve Sweeney to its hall of fame.
    East Casey County Water District issued a boil-water advisory because of too little water and too much demand.The district has six water tanks scattered throughout the county that are between 20 and 30 percent full.

    The family of Sandy Harris, 30, was offering a $10,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of her killer. Harris went missing in July 2005. Part of her remains were found in a wooded area off Bastin Creek Road on Dec. 27, 2005. Ten months later, on Oct. 31, 2006, a man hauling gravel found her skull in Bastin Creek.
    Barry Lee was named new principal at Casey County High School. He follows Tim Goodlett, who resigned after six years at the high to school to become principal at the new Walnut Hill Elementary.

    A Liberty woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries after being hurt while working at Barron Pallets on Ky. 1552. Employee Neli Terrones, 37, was loading boars into a rip saw machine when her ponytail was pulled into a machine with rollers. When she reached to free her hair, her fingers also were pulled into the machine.
