Meeting in special session Thursday with only one item on the agenda, the Liberty Tourism and Convention Commission granted a request from Brad Vaughn for funds to purchase fireworks for the county’s July 4th celebration at the Central Kentucky AG/EXPO Center.

However, whereas the commission funded the entire $15,000 last year, this year, the amount — $15,500 — will be split equally among the city, fiscal court, and the commission.

Vaughn, not in attendance at the meeting, stated on the application for the funds the annual event attracts about 4,000 to the Ag Center.

County Judge-Executive Randy Dial said Friday he favors the three bodies sharing the cost.

“I expect the magistrates will approve this at the next meeting,” he said. “Before, it was split between the city and county with us each paying $7,500, so this is less expensive.”

The next regular meeting of the commission is at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at City Hall.
