Casey XC posts nice finishes on tough course at Catbird Classic

The Casey County High School Cross Country team finally got a chance to get out on the course for a regular season meet in 2018 over the weekend. Course issues forced their first meet off the schedule and now, they got their chance to show the work they had put in over the off season.
For the boys, there were two that competed at the Catbird Classic in London, Kentucky for Casey County. Federico Diaz and Isaac Turpin. Diaz took ninth overall posting an 18:32.62 in the first meet of his senior campaign while Turpin, in the first XC meet of his young career, finished 64th with a respectable 23:06.88.
“Fede(rico Diaz) is making every practice,” coach Jon Vaughn said. “So, he should be there for us at the end of the season. He is a multi-sport athlete who takes both sports serious. I wish I had more Federico’s. Issac Turpin ran in his first-ever cross country race. He ran track with us and is working very hard. I think we will see a huge drop in his time next time out.”
The girls seemed to pick up right where they left off despite weather conditions and sickness.
Three finished in the top 10 and four in the top 20 in their opening meet of the season. Jenna Vaughn would lead the way finishing fifth (21:29.41) with her sister Abby close behind in seventh (21:30.68) while Alyssa Sharp came in right behind in eighth place (21:31.31). Lotte Gertler made the most of the first meet of the new Cross-Country year posting a personal best 24:15.93.
“I was very happy with the girls on this tough course,” stated coach Vaughn. “Lotte Gertler not only finished in the top 20 overall, but she also had a personal best time. This is a testament to how hard she has been training. Can’t wait to get her on a faster course on a nice day to see how many minutes she drops her time.”
Vaughn added. “One of our five was sick but ran anyway so we could score as a team.  Morgan was way off her time bc of sickness, but did the best she could.”
Casey XC will travel to Bowling Green this weekend for meet number two of the season.
