A Casey County resident has been honored by Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center for her extraordinary patient care, according to a statement from the hospital.

Tamara Burkhart, a registered nurse in the medical-surgical unit, was among a group of nurses nominated for the DAISY Award.

Burkhart has been with the hospital for about two and a half years. She was nominated by a patient’s family member.

The family member said, “Tamara was our day shift nurse the day before our mother died. She was so patient with our large family and was a calm presence in a time of emotional stress for our family. She initiated a room change which would accommodate everyone who wanted to be close to Mama in her final hours.

“She also told us there was a possibility of disabling Mama’s pacemaker if she tarried too long, as Mama was ready to go to heaven. We did not need to pursue the pacemaker option because the Lord took Mama home that night. We were blessed to have Tamara’s calm, caring, professional presence during Mama’s last day on earth.”

The DAISY Award is a national program honoring compassionate care and clinical excellence by nurses. Nomination forms for the DAISY Award are available at various locations throughout EMRMC and Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital.
