Children's charity benefits

from pop tab collectors

Thousands of people every day pull the tabs off a soft drink or other beverage can and toss them into a container.
But what are they saving them for?
We've all heard how pop tabs can be saved to help children afflicted with cancer go to camp, to help pay for chemotherapy treatments, to provide wheelchairs, or to just simply recycle them to help the environment.

Schools face cuts

Rising costs, less funding may

cut some extended school programs

The Casey County school district isn't alone in its efforts to save money as costs increase.
Casey County School Superintendent Linda Hatter said school districts across the Commonwealth are tightening their belts to cut costs. Some districts are losing jobs and being forced to cut programs.
“I think every superintendent will tell you that they are scrambling right now,” she said. “We will definitely feel the impact.”


Four defendants in drug round-up plead guilty

Two Casey County men are among 14 people from five states who have been named in a federal indictment charging them with being a part of a multi-state marijuana distribution ring.
Robert “Fritz” Sheene, 46, of 1517 Casey Creek Road, Liberty, and Ralph Michael Hughes, 37, of 1343 Bastin Creek Road, Kings Mountain, are among the 14 who have been charged with conspiracy to distribute marijuana.


Manslaughter trial set for May 19


A Casey County teenager charged with the death of his cousin is scheduled to go to trial on May 19.
Joe C. Yates, 17, was indicted for first-degree manslaughter in May of last year in connection with the April 18, 2007 death of William Joshua Williams, 25. Williams died at the Casey County Hospital a few hours after Yates had allegedly hit him in the head with his fists when the two argued earlier in the day.
