Local schools could lose $1M in state funding

By Brittany Johnson
Staff Writer

Schools across the Commonwealth could see significant cuts in state funding for the 2008-09 school year, and the most drastic cuts could result in a loss of more than $1 million in state funding for the Casey County school district, school officials say.
In a worse-case scenario, Manager of District-wide Services Deena Randolph said that while a possible 7 percent cut in SEEK funding could cause local cuts across the board in the school system — including salaries — the fate of school funding will not be known until a budget is passed in Frankfort by the General Assembly in April.

The $3.6 million city sewer project on U.S. 127 and Ky. 70 is progressing, officials say, and the project's pace is picking up.
Mayor Steve Sweeney said even though the project fell behind schedule in recent weeks, it currently is 33 percent finished and those working are “catching up.”

Truck crashes into empty house

A teenager was sent to Casey County Hospital Saturday after a vehicle in which he was a passenger crashed into a house. According to a report by Deputy Freeman Luttrell, Lincoln B. Wells, 18, of 2073 Ky. 198, Middleburg, was westbound on Ky. 70 East in Yosemite around 1 p.m. when he swerved to avoid a vehicle making a left turn. Wells’ 2001 Chevrolet pickup left the roadway on the right side and struck a house. The house, which is owned by William Godbey of 7589 East Ky. 70, Yosemite, was unoccupied and is located next door to the Godbey residence. Wells was not injured, but a passenger in his truck, K.J. Morgan, 17, of East Fork Road, sustained some injuries to his legs and feet, Luttrell said. Casey EMS transported the teen to the local hospital.
