By Donna Carman

The investigation into the death of a Casey County man continues, but no arrests have yet been made in the murder of Glenn "Cactus" Randolph.
Randolph, 74, of 4528 U.S. 127 North, was found dead in his home around 6 p.m. Jan. 29. He had been shot in the face while lying on the couch.
"We've had some things checked out, but it's not really led to anything yet," said Sheriff Jerry Coffman, whose office is assisting Detective George Atwood and the Kentucky State Police in the investigation.

Snowy fun

Wintery weather continues to cover the area, giving students in Casey County unplanned days off from school on Friday, Monday and Tuesday. But the icy scenery comes at a price. The frigid temperatures and weather caused the East Casey County Water District to experience some electrical problems and possibly led to some water line breaks this weekend, Assistant Manager Eddie Wesley said. Freezing temperatures are expected to continue throughout the week. ABOVE, Jake Atwood, 10, pulls his sisters, Emily Atwood, 6, and Kendra Cochran, 9, across the snow at their home on Singleton Drive, off KY 70 East, on Friday. RIGHT, cousins Savannah Wilham, 8, and Cedric Dunson, 12, have a serious snowball fight on Adams Street in Liberty.

New Fire Truck

ISO says age does not affect rating

By Brittany Johnson
Staff Writer

Even though the Insurance Service Office does not require the purchase of a new fire truck every 20 years, Chief Donnie Wilson and the Liberty Fire Department say it's time for an update.
The ISO classifies each fire department on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 representing exemplary fire protection and 10 indicating that the community's fire suppression program does not meet the minimum criteria set by the ISO. The lower the ranking, the less residents pay in insurance.

Plans put in motion for animal shelter

By Donna Carman
Editor

It's not a reality, but Casey County is one step closer to an animal shelter. However, the project carries a big "if."
Magistrates approved a resolution at Monday night's fiscal court meeting, calling for the development of an animal shelter, if and when the funding becomes available.

County to enact bank franchise tax

City has collected $234,611 since 1996 from bank fees

By Donna Carman
Editor

With the county standing to lose about $60,000 a year if the City of Liberty decides to increase its insurance premium tax to 6 percent, county officials plan to recoup about half of that through another tax.
The first reading of an ordinance to enact a bank franchise tax on local financial institutions was given first reading Monday night by the Casey County Fiscal Court.
