Couple faces charges of animal cruelty

Five horses remain in the county's care after officers with the Casey County Sheriff's Department removed them from their owners last week.
Thomas Charles Williams, 42, and his wife, Cynthia, 40, of 1427 Matherly Road, were arrested on Thursday, charged with second-degree cruelty to animals. They were lodged in the Casey County Detention Center under $250 cash bonds and are scheduled to appear in Casey District Court on March 15.

State seeks to condemn land
for new part of KY 70

The state Transportation Cabinet Department of Highways has filed suit against a Casey County couple, seeking to condemn a part of their property to be used in reconstructing a portion of KY 70.
Keith Upchurch, counsel for the Transportation Cabinet's Somerset office, filed the action in Casey Circuit Court on Feb. 16 against James D. and Glenna Bryant of 3779 West KY 70.
Fires damage house, mobile home

Two residential fires in Casey County last week resulted in little damage.

wood stove flue, where the damage was contained. The home was owned by R.G. Short.
Liberty, along with Brush Creek and East Casey County's departments, were on the scene for less than an hour.
Brush Creek's firefighters also responded to a fire on Feb. 20 at a mobile home on KY 49. The trailer, owned by Rose Murphy, was not heavily damaged in the afternoon fire. It started underneath the trailer with some wiring, Murphy said.
Murphy said Tracy Brown currently is residing in the trailer.
Sending stray animals to Taylor County
would be 'a good starting point'

As more attention is focused on the growing problem of stray animals - and with a deadline looming to do something about it - Casey County is hoping neighboring Taylor County will lend a hand.
At the Feb. 19 meeting of the Casey County Fiscal Court, magistrates agreed to a proposal submitted by Judge-Executive Ronald Wright to transport Casey's stray dogs and cats to the Taylor County Animal Shelter.
General contractor hired for
new Casey County Hospital

Plans are progressing on the new Casey County Hospital as a general contractor was hired earlier this month.
Doster Construction of Louisville, one of three general contractors interviewed last month, was officially hired by the hospital's board of trustees on Feb. 13. Doster, whose overall fee was 3.5 percent of construction costs, earned the position over Messer Construction of Lexington and Bovus Construction of Nashville. Both submitted bids of 3.75 percent.
