Copper thieves caught

Three Russell County men have been arrested on 28 felony charges in connection with recent break-ins involving the theft of copper. Billy W. Shearer, 26, and John Dearing, 33, both of 451 Wayne Road, Russell Springs, were each arrested Sunday night by Deputies Chad Weddle and Freeman Luttrell at the junction of KY 80 and KY 910.
Greg Thomas, 24, of 2925 Lakeway Drive, Russell Springs - who was already lodged in the Casey County Detention Center - was also charged Sunday evening in connection with the thefts.

Casey asks Taylor to take stray animals

Pros, cons of shelter debated at fiscal court

Casey County's stray animals may soon be going to Taylor County.
Magistrates approved a proposal by Judge-Executive Ronald Wright Monday night to pay the Taylor County Animal Shelter $7,200 a year to house its strays. Wright said that figure would include food, veterinarian's fees, and euthanasia, when necessary.
It does not, however, include transportation to and from the facility, which would be done by Casey's dog warden, Ricky Luttrell.


Miller still on leave

Results of KSP investigation expected this week

After being suspended Jan. 5, Liberty Police Sgt. Joey Miller remains on paid leave pending an investigation from Kentucky State Police, Mayor Steve Sweeney said.
But Sweeney said he is expecting to hear the results of the investigation this week, which will determine Miller's fate with the department.


Magistrate loses truck, saves cattle

in fire on U.S. 127 in Russell

A Casey County magistrate escaped injury Feb. 13 when his truck caught on fire and burned in a matter of minutes.
David Phelps was on his way to the stockyards with a load of cattle around 3:15 p.m. when his truck started acting strange.
"I thought the transmission was slipping," Phelps said.
