Car plows into Dairy Mart, hits customers

Driver faces several charges

By Brittany Johnson
Staff Writer

A Liberty teenager remains hospitalized after being seriously injured in a freak accident last week, and the driver of the vehicle that hit her faces numerous charges.
A car crashed into Dairy Mart at 437 Wallace Wilkinson Boulevard Wednesday, seriously injuring Jessica Price and sending two others to the hospital.
The accident occurred at 7:15 p.m. when a 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis, driven by Barbara "Jeanie" Allen, 61, of Dunnville, came through the glass doors and front wall and windows of the store. It just missed the check-out counter and left tire marks on the floor.

New Court

Four county employees lose jobs

By Donna Carman
Editor

The new Casey County Fiscal Court wasted little time in shaking things up as their first order of business on Jan. 1 dealt with personnel. And not all survived.
The court convened at 8 a.m. New Year's Day to rehire county personnel. However, four employees were not rehired and two had their salaries cut.
Arnold D. Morgan, who had been foreman at the county road department for 20 1/2 years, was among those who lost his job. On Monday, Judge-Executive Ronald Wright said county employees are hired for four-year terms and are considered "at will" employees.

Couple indicted days after two break-ins

By Donna Carman

A Casey County couple accused of breaking into two residences were indicted Monday on burglary and theft charges.
Douglas J. Berry, 44, and his wife, Sandra Berry, 43, both of 1411 Strong Branch Road, Liberty, are accused of breaking into two properties owned by Ray Martin on Jan. 1 and Jan. 3.
According to Deputy Chad Weddle, Martin reported the first break-in, which occurred at his home at 1343 Strong Branch Road. Weddle said the thieves gained entry by prying open a window. Taken were a .25 automatic pistol, a .38 Smith & Wesson revolver, $8 to $10 in change, and five rental checks totaling about $1,000.
