School board races will be contested

11 file or 6 city council seats

By Donna Carman
Editor

Both school board seats up for election in November will face opposition as three people have filed for school board member of District 2.
Dennis Bair, 42, of 1152 Vaughn Road, Liberty, and Anthony Edwards, 40, of 8652 KY 1547, Liberty, both filed papers on Monday, while Jim Worley, 64, of 212 Napier Street, Liberty, declared his intentions Aug. 1.
All three are seeking the seat currently held by Board Chairman Gary Whited. Whited, who will complete 16 years, announced in May that he would not seek a fifth term. District 2 covers Liberty A (West Liberty), Casey 4 (Consolidated) and Casey 5 (Wess-Whited).

Three schools mark last 'first day'

By Donna Carman
Editor

The "Super Heroes" were on display at Douglas Elementary Friday night, and several of them stood outside the door of sixth-grade teacher Gerri Fletcher.
With exclamations of "cool" and "awesome," the "big boys" (and girls) of Douglas eagerly poured over the hall display, pointing to their Super Hero names, pictures, and profiles as assigned by Fletcher.
"The kids just love this stuff," Fletcher said, offering explanations on how she came up with each child's Super Hero name. "They all want to laminate them and hang them in their cubbies."
