Restaurant owner among illegal aliens rounded up

The owner of a local restaurant has been arrested on charges of being in the United States illegally.
Zhi Yong Zhang, who owns China King on Wallace Wilkinson Boulevard, was arrested June 5 after local officers discovered that he was wanted by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Liberty Police Officer Steven Garrett said he ran the plates on Zhang's vehicle one evening and found out that he had been wanted by immigration officials since 1993.

City has plan to help with heating bills

While most concerns from Liberty residents have turned to the cost of electricity in keeping cool this summer, the City of Liberty is offering a gas payment program to help alleviate the high cost of heating for next winter.
City Clerk Sharleen Rodgers said the city is now equipped with a program that will make gas payments more affordable. She said the 12-month payment plan provides the customer with the same monthly payment over the course of a year.

Poplar Springs Fire Dept. award

Members of a Casey County volunteer fire department have become a little more "wise" in learning about firefighting in their area.
The Poplar Springs Volunteer Fire Department was recognized by officials with the state Division of Forestry Thursday night as the newest Firewise USA Community in the state.
According to Leah MacSwords, Director of the Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet's Department for Natural Resources, Division of Forestry, Poplar Springs is only the fourth Firewise community in Kentucky, and one of only 144 in the United States.
