Mother of 5 dies when car attempts to pass

The Memorial Day weekend turned tragic Friday as a mother of five was killed in a head-on collision not far from her home.
According to a report by Trooper Jeremy Johnson, Patricia D. Patterson, 37, of Liberty, was driving a 1987 Chevrolet car north on KY 1649 at 6:30 p.m. when she was struck head-on by a southbound 1999 vehicle driven by Ryan L. Smith, 23, of Somerset. Patterson, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene by Casey County Coroner Tommy Clark.

The Class of 2006 bid farewell to Casey County High School Thursday night
amid the usual cheers, tears and hugs that accompany high school graduations.
CCHS Principal Tim Goodlett got a few wet handshakes from the boys during the diploma presentation as small wet sponges were pressed into his hand. He was also the recipient of several Hawaiian leis as many of the girls in the 138-member class hung the plastic flowers around his neck as they received their diplomas.
Tree falls on family's car while fleeing storm

A Thursday night storm came very close to turning tragic for one local family as a tree fell on their vehicle as they were attempting to get to safety.
A severe thunderstorm warning was issued Thursday around 11 p.m. for all of
Casey County by the National Weather Service in Louisville. Casey County E-911 Dispatch Center reported the late-night storm was responsible for several downed trees over roadways, mostly in the western and northern parts of the county. Road crews and volunteer firefighters worked until 2 a.m. Friday clearing the roads of trees. According to an E-911 dispatcher, three trees fell across KY 70 West, with one at KY 1547. Three other downed trees had to be removed from KY 49 and the Caney Fork Road area.
Whited will not seek another
term on board of education

The dust has barely settled on the primary election, but as talk turns to the general election races, there is at least one person who knows he won't be seeking a seat in one of the non-partisan races.
Gary Whited, a 16-year member of the Casey County Board of Education, announced recently that he would not seek another term. Whited, who holds the District 2 seat, has been chairman the last two years and was vice chairman four years before that.
