Ag/expo center attracts

major horse show

Event expected to have $2M economic impact on area

By Linda Carmicle
Staff Writer

One of the most coveted events in the show horse industry is coming to Casey County. It will feature around 1,000 horse entries from 10 states and is expected to draw an estimated 20,000 people to the area.
The good news came Saturday to Jerry Hoskins, a member of the Central Kentucky AG/EXPO Center Development Board, while attending a Kentucky Walking Horse Association convention in Lexington. Hoskins said he campaigned throughout the weekend assembly to bring the KWHA annual event to Casey County. He said for the past 20 years the event has been held at the Mercer County Fairgrounds in Harrodsburg.

Cundiff building to be site of local Somerset

Community College campus

Officials hope building will be ready for fall enrollment

By Linda Carmicle
Staff Writer

It appears Somerset Community College will locate a campus in Casey County.
Judge-Executive Ronald Wright told magistrates at Monday's fiscal court meeting that the Cundiff Wellness Center building north of Liberty on U.S. 127 was recently appraised. The appraisal value will allow the county to contribute $25,000 toward the purchase of the facility.
Wright said he has met with representatives from Somerset Community College and Lindsey Wilson College three or four times and have shown them every site available for a college in the county. But they all agreed on the Cundiff property as the most suitable site until a permanent facility can be constructed.

Those who want to seek public office this fall have less than two weeks to file their intentions for the May 16 primary election.
Potential candidates seeking a spot on the ballot have until 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, to file their paperwork in County Clerk Eva Miller's office. Those seeking area offices must file by that same deadline at the Secretary of State's office in Frankfort.

State ME releases Harris' remains

The remains of a Casey County woman have been released by the state medical examiner's office and her family is now planning a memorial service.
Deputy Coroner Betty Bartle Clark said Dr. Emily Craig, a forensic anthropologist with the state medical examiner's office, released the remains of Sandra Harris on Thursday. However, the cause of her death has not yet been determined.
Harris' skeletal remains were found Dec. 27 by her mother, Frances Harris, in a wooded area near her home on Bastin Creek Road. Harris and her granddaughter were walking along a creek when they came upon the human bones. Positive identification was not made until Jan. 3.
Harris had reported her daughter missing in mid-August after last seeing her on July 1. Harris told authorities it was not unusual for her daughter, an Army veteran who suffered from a mental illness, to disappear for weeks at a time.
The memorial service for Sandy Harris, 30, is set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.
