Fiery crash kills father, injures son

A father is dead and his son injured following a one-vehicle accident late Wednesday night in the Bethelridge community.
According to a report by Trooper Dewayne Holder, the accident occurred at 11:05 p.m. about 15 miles east of Liberty on KY 70. The report stated that Daniel Clay "Boone" Haste, 47, of 135 Rock Lick Road, was traveling west when he left the roadway, striking a tree and a culvert. The vehicle then caught fire and burned.

Saying Good-bye...Saying Hello

Garrett, Middleburg teachers look back and look ahead

What once seemed so far away will be a reality in just two more days as two of Casey County's elementary schools will close.
When students and staff walk out of Middleburg and Garrett elementaries on Friday at noon to begin their Christmas break, it will mark the end of an era.
They'll not be returning to those buildings. Instead, the two bodies will come together on Jan. 9 to mark the opening of Jones Park Elementary.
"I think it's going to be like the first day of school all over again, for me and the kids," said Carol Price, a sixth-grade teacher at Garrett.

Motion denied

Judge will not recuse himself from child custody case

Casey Circuit Judge James G. Weddle has overruled a motion that he recuse himself in a child custody case.
Danville attorney Edward Hays, who represents Arletta Bendschneider, filed the motion on Wednesday in Casey Circuit Court. Weddle ruled on the motion Monday morning, hearing from both Hays and Lebanon attorney Ted Lavit, who represents Jack Bendschneider Jr.

Couple indicted for abusing baby

A Casey County couple arrested in October on charges of abusing their six-week-old daughter was indicted Monday by a Casey County grand jury.
Jennifer H. Thomas, 23, and David L. Owens, 19, both of 7084 Thomas Ridge Road, were each indicted on charges of first-degree criminal abuse. According to the indictments, they intentionally abused, or permitted the other to abuse, their infant daughter, who was born Sept. 10, 2005. The alleged abuse occurred on Oct. 21.

Fire leaves family of four homeless

Separate fires have taken the homes of two Casey County families in the past week.
A family of four was left homeless following a Monday night fire on KY 910.
Missy Owens, a spokesperson for the Dunnville Volunteer Fire Department, said the home of Roger and Connie Wright at 4319 KY 910 was destroyed in a fire that broke out at 7:50 p.m.
