Liberty gets clean audit

The City of Liberty’s finances have improved over the last year, and its audit came back clean.

Auditor Heather Cochran, of RHF Consultants, gave the Liberty City Council a report on the city’s annual audit on April 9 and said that there weren’t any problems.

She said that the reports were an accurate accounting of the city’s books, and the company gave the city a “clean opinion,” which is the best opinion.

“That’s as good as it gets,” Cochran said.

Playground organizer talks to council

Kendyl and Friends Founder Crimson Claycomb, of Harrodsburg, told the Liberty City Council that a new inclusive playground could be financed through fundraising and grants.

She told the story of how she was able to organize a fundraising effort to construct a new playground for children with disabilities in Harrodsburg, and said that playgrounds are much more than just toys for kids to play on.

Taryn Parr, of Liberty, was charged with misdemeanor criminal mischief third degree. According to the citation she allegedly kicked a hole in a door and broker a cup maker at the Liberty Ranch. Her court date is set for April 26.

Casey archers compete at State Tournament

After making it to the State Tournament as individuals at the 10th region Tournament held at Lincoln County, four Casey County archers competed at the State Tournament March 29-31 in Louisville.

Justin Luttrell became the first Casey County archer to compete at the State Tournament last year, and impressed shooting a 287 to finish in 97th place overall out of 3,247 male shooters.

Distance runners shine last week for CCHS Track and Field

Casey County Track and Field and a good week as they approach the stretch run of their season heading towards regionals and State.

The boy’s and girl’s 4x800 relay teams each continue to show out with the boys (Noah Brown, Federico Diaz, Juan Cuin and Cristian Solis) taking first at the Southwestern All Comers Meet Tuesday, April 10 and second among 2A teams (9:28.10) at the Clash of the Classes in Bardstown, on Saturday.

Veterans ask for apology for lies about service

Veterans from Casey County are asking for a public apology from Daniel Clay Cheatham, of Liberty, for lies about serving with the military in Afghanistan.

They say this is a case of “Stolen Valor.”

A website run by Ambrosia Wellness, which was formerly located in Liberty but is now in Danville, had a biography for Cheatham.

Local farmer wins corn yield contest

A Casey County farmer grew 315.22 bushels of corn per acre — enough to win his category in the National Corn Yield Contest for the State of Kentucky.

Billy Morris, of Liberty, said in an interview that he knew it would be a bumper crop last year. He just didn’t know how good it was until harvest.

“I knew it was really good. It was the best crop I’ve ever grown, but it surprised me to get over 300 (bushels per acre),” he said. “I thought I’d get 275.”

Severe thunderstorms roll though Casey County

Storms on April 3 left behind a rising Green River, several downed trees and even brought down a power line.

Casey County’s Emergency Management Director Rick Wesley said that he did not anticipate that much flooding following the storms, but the Green River was up and out of its banks near Casey County High School. In the early morning of April 4, Randolph Street in Liberty was flooded.

Girls tennis improve to 8-2 with 3-0 week

The Lady Raquet Rebs swept a trio of matches last week coming off the break the week before taking care of business 8-1 over Russell County, 4-1 against Taylor County and survived a tight one with Mercer County 3-2.
