'Forgotten' property could house sports complex
By Kendra Peek
Summer Intern
A 12-acre area of land unknowingly owned by the Casey County School District is now being looked at as a good location for a future high school baseball/softball sports complex.
The Casey County Board of Education learned of this "forgotten" property at a special-called meeting June 24, which lies to the east of the bus garage.
Casey County High School's softball field sits to the left and the baseball field is currently located on the far right edge of their football field.

City budget tops out at $12 million

By Brittany Emerson
Staff Writer
The City of Liberty plans for a $12 million total budget for the next fiscal year, but $7.9 million of that is earmarked for city water and sewer capital projects as well as the Liberty Crossing pedestrian walkway, leaving the city with slightly more than $4.1 million on which to operate for the coming year.
Liberty City Council gave first reading to the budget June 23 and second reading and passage on June 24 at special-called meetings.
The budget approved at first reading included $7.3 million for the city sewer and water plant expansion projects.

Historian
In researching the history of the city of Liberty I immediately observed the difficulty in separating city history from county history. Truthfully, the history of the city and county are intertwined. You cannot discuss one very much without discussing the other. Their histories have always crossed paths. The newly-formed county government established the city. The community of Liberty was governed through the county court during the early years until 1813.

Construction Continues
Construction continues on U.S. 127 South at the Liberty city limits. Road crews have been working since December on the project, which will link a new portion of Ky. 70 West with U.S. 127 South. The project is expected to be finished by August 2009 but that date could change depending on weather.
Construction is now in front of the Casey County Extension Office.
"We are looking forward to the completion of the project as it will make things more convenient for our clientele," said Debbie Shepherd, County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences.
ABOVE, a dump truck crosses the driveway in front of the extension office as a truck waits to pull out from Shugars Hill Road.
