Manslaughter trial halted with plea

Originally charged as adult, teen will be sentenced as juvenile in death of cousin

A Casey County teen pleaded guilty to reckless homicide on Friday in connection with his cousin’s death last year.
Joe Carl Yates, 17, faced a trial by jury last week after he was indicted for first-degree manslaughter in May 2007 for the April 18, 2007 death of 25-year-old William Joshua Williams. Yates, who was originally charged with murder as an adult, was 16 when Williams died.

Dunnville postmaster sentenced for embezzlement

A Casey County woman who formerly worked at the Dunnville Post Office has been sentenced to three years' probation after pleading guilty to embezzlement.
Judy Clark, 60, of 1236 Owens Branch Road, Dunnville, was sentenced July 1 in United States District Court in Bowling Green, according to U.S. Attorney David L. Huber of the Western District of Kentucky.
Clark pleaded guilty on March 31 to charges of embezzlement listed in the indictment returned on Dec. 5, 2007. According to the indictment, Clark, on at least 10 different occasions, fraudulently made U.S. Postal Service money orders payable to herself.
The indictment charges 10 instances when Clark, while working as the Dunnville Postmaster, fraudently stole the money orders. The total amount charged in the indictment is $3,049.49.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Bryan Calhoun and was investigated by the United States Postal Service, Office of the Inspector General.

Liberty pulling out all stops for Fourth of July, 200th birthday

From just after dawn to way after dusk, Casey Countians will be able to celebrate our country’s independence and the 200th birthday of the county seat all day long on Friday.
“We invite all Casey County natives to come to Liberty and celebrate our bicentennial with us on that day,” Mayor Steve Sweeney said.
From the running of the Liberty Bell 5K Run at 8 a.m., to the spectacular “Thunder on the Green” fireworks show at 10 p.m., those attending the July 4 festivities in Liberty will surely find something to please them.

Operation Joint Effort defendants make pleas, sentenced

Cases involve 6 of the 48 charged

Cases against defendants charged in the January 2008 Operation Joint Effort drug round-up continue to wind their way through Casey Circuit Court as six of the 48 arrested on indictment warrants have made pleas or were sentenced recently.
-- Jerry Lee Watson, 60, (a/k/a Jerry Black), of 277 Reese Road, Russell Springs, entered a guilty plea June 16 to two counts of trafficking in a controlled substance, first and second degrees, which occurred in June and August, 2007. Two counts of being a persistent felony offender, first degree, were dismissed.

Trial dates set for suspects in 2005 burglaries


Trial dates set
Six people indicted in April for their roles in a string of 2005 burglaries have had their trial dates set.
Travis Lee Goodin, 37, and his wife, Adriel Marie Goodin, 25, of 5011 Casey Creek Road, Liberty; Rodney “Zeke” Barber, 39, of 3692 North U.S. 27, Science Hill; Tammy S. Barber, 29, of 1423 East Ky. 70, Liberty; and Jean Marie Harrison, 31, are all scheduled to stand trial in Casey Circuit Court on Dec. 1. Each is scheduled to return Aug. 25 for a pre-trial conference.
