  • Lee assumes new position with Casey County school district

    When school bells ring for students at Casey County High School on Aug. 8, a familiar face won’t be there to greet them.
    Principal Barry Lee has resigned that position after five years to become the Director of Special Education and Preschool Services at the Casey School District Office.
    Lee replaces Tishana Cundiff, who retires the end of this month after more than 31 years in education.
    Superintendent Linda Hatter said that she’s excited and pleased that Lee will be serving in this capacity.

  • Liberty Elementary to get new heating/cooling system

    If everything goes according to schedule, Liberty Elementary School students and teachers will attend school beginning in January in climate-controlled comfort.
    Casey County Board of Education members learned at Monday night’s meeting that bids for the $127,000 project should be opened on July 13 with work commencing Aug. 8, said John Newman, an engineer with Clotfelter-Samokar in Lexington.
    According to District Maintenance Director Dale Sellers, contractors will replace the old boiler unit used to heat the building.

  • School district financial audit exemplary

    Casey County School Board members heard Dec. 12 that the handling of the district’s finances — by district staff and faculty and staff from the five schools — is a model of excellence and one of the finest in the state.
    Artie White, of White and Associates of Richmond, conducted the annual audit for the financial year which ended June 30.
    White said there were no findings from the prior year which indicates that the district’s financial performance was faultless.

  • School board considers building locker room

    Casey County Board of Education members tabled an architect’s proposed estimate of $94,000 to $118,000 for a 500-square foot locker room addition at Casey County High School, based largely on design elements in the plan.
    Russ McFarland, with the architect and engineering firm of Clotfelter Samokar in Lexington, presented the building estimate to board members at their regular meeting on Nov. 14.
    However, the cost estimate from the architect is just that, an estimate. McFarland is available to assist the board with the bid process.

  • Schools hold special services for veterans

    Members of the Casey County High School Y Club, FFA-ATC and the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) held a solemn and dignified ceremony on Friday designed to both honor veterans and educate students about the origins of Veterans Day.
    Prior to the ceremony in the CCHS gym, cadets and Y club members hosted a reception for the veterans and their families in the CCHS library.
    AFJROTC Commander Cadet Lt. Col. Bethany Scott served as emcee for the event.

  • 2011 GYE winners announced

    This year’s Growing Young Entrepreneurs competition was held on Sept. 15 at the Kentucky Tech Casey County ATC.
    Students who were interested in starting their own business wrote a business plan and made a presentation to several local business leaders and educators.
    Winners in the GYE presentation are Ryan Martin, first; Ali Thompson, second; and Logan Hooten, third.
    Martin was awarded $500, a laptop, and a mentoring from a Kentucky Entrepreneurial Coaches Institute (KECI) coach.
