Rowell: Lessons from a newspaper legend

Every community has its legends both living and dead. And Casey County certainly has its share.
I’ve enjoyed meeting some real live legends as I’ve worked in the county and I’ve also reveled in the stories of some legends who are no longer with us.
One of those legends was Fred Burkhard, the owner and editor/publisher of The Casey County News from 1947 to 1973.
I never had the honor of meeting this journalistic folk hero who died in 1990 but I have had ample opportunity to read his stories and columns in our archives.
