I'm writing to piggy back off of Joberta's column of a few weeks ago about Judd Field. I think one of the baseball fields here, possibly Gateway Park or possibly Casey County High, should be named after Donald Durham. For those who don't know Donald, let me tell you a few things about him. He was the only player in the last fifty years from Casey County who made the major leagues, playing for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Texas Rangers. I don't know who before Donald played in the majors. Donald's accomplishment could be the only one of its type in the last century. Donald was an amazingly talented athlete. He played both baseball and basketball for the varsity high school team while he was in the sixth or seventh grade. I played against him in Little League and as his teammate in high school. He was the best player of us all. As we get older and the people who knew Donald pass on, it's very possible that his accomplishments will be forgotten and he'll never get the recognition he deserves. Now is the time that someone should do something about recognizing him forever.
