Lady Rebs beat Garrard, fall at Southwestern

Casey County girls basketball took on Garrard County (12-9) and Southwestern (14-8) last week and came out the other side 1-1, trying to figure out where their defense had gone.
“We had a really bad week of basketball,” coach Tara Weddle said. “We didn’t shoot the ball well and we have a bad habit of getting lazy on D if our shots don’t fall.”
Despite having a tough time offensively and that leading to bad defense, the Lady Rebels overcame a sluggish first half at home when Garrard County came to town.
The Lady Lions led at halftime 18-16 after a low-scoring first half, but Casey nearly doubled their scoring output in the final two periods to take the contest 46-40.
“They fought hard and never gave up,” Weddle said. “Garrard County was much more experienced than us and played with experience. The girls fought hard to win that game.”
The Casey win allowed the Lady Rebels to improve to 18-4 on the season and 6-2 in 12th Region play.
Much of the season, Weddle’s team has been keeping opponents around the 50-point mark or below including the win at home against the Lady Lions.
The trip to Southwestern last Tuesday night would not fit the pattern prompting the head coach to call it the “worst game we have played this season, hands down.”
The Lady Rebels had an uncharacteristic night in the paint.
They were out rebounded and allowed an abundance of points in the paint en route to a 23-point loss, Casey’s worst loss of the season since a loss at Marshall County in December.
“We got out rebounded by 20 and we didn’t even have 20 rebounds for the game,” said Weddle. “We just let them shoot layups and in-the-paint shots and what they missed they got another chance and if they missed that then we gave them another chance.”
The Lady Warriors punished Casey on the boards 39-19 and shot a sizzling 63 percent from the floor.
The Lady Rebels gave up 70 points for the first time this season falling to Southwestern 73-50 to move to 18-5 overall on the year and 6-3 in 12th Region play.
“We just didn’t show up,” said Weddle. “We didn’t communicate. We just flat out didn’t play.”
There are still big games to go for the Lady Rebels ahead of the 47th District Tournament including two games against top-25 teams in (23) Russell County and (2) Mercer County, but this coach isn’t going to let this team fold up because of any one loss.
“When you hit rock bottom there are only two choices,” Weddle said. “Stay there or move past where you were. We are going to move beyond where we were. We learn something from every game, we aren’t going to let one game defeat the rest of our season.”
