Casey High Class of 2008 sends 150 on their next journey

By Donna Carman

One hundred fifty young men and women reached a turning point in their lives Monday night as Casey County High School graduated its Class of 2008.
“Tonight you end (a part of your life) and tomorrow you begin another,” Principal Barry Lee told the class.
He urged the new graduates to remember the good times they’d had with their classmates during their years together.

City council passes water rate hike

Burning in city now by permit only

By Brittany Emerson
Staff Writer

Water rates will be going up, and burning within the Liberty city limits will be curtailed, as the Liberty City Council gave second reading and passages to those ordinances at a special-called meeting Thursday.
The council voted unanimously to approve the ordinance that increases each city water customer's minimum bill from $9.60 to $11.42, with the prices for additional gallons increasing as well.
Out-of-town customers will now pay $13.79 for a minimum bill, compared with $11.59 before.
Mayor Steve Sweeney said this increase is to help finance the cost of bonds for the city's water plant expansion, a nearly $6 million project.

Relay for Life Exceeds Goal

Teams, sponsors raise more than $70,000

By Donna Carman
Editor

When Casey’s Relay for Life chairperson Nicki Tarter was given the Relay’s total at 4 p.m. Friday, she let out a squeal of excitement as nearly $58,500 had been turned in.
That meant the goal of $68,000 was certainly attainable.
And, just shortly after midnight when all the money had been turned in and counted, Tarter and everyone who worked so hard on this 11th annual event could begin the celebration in earnest.
The final tally — $70,751.98.
“We’re ecstatic,” said Brooke Cary, American Cancer Society community representative. “We were not prepared for Casey County to totally blow out their goal.”

4 Years of Chaos

Woman recalls husband's battle with cancer

By Donna Carman
Editor

Three years ago, Karen Wethington watched as her then 5-year-old daughter, Kendra, hung a cancer survivor’s medallion around the neck of her husband, Robby, at Casey County’s Relay for Life.
On Friday night, Karen and both her daughters, Kendra and Kara, were at the Relay, even though it was difficult. That’s because this year there was no medal to hang around her husband’s neck.
Robby Wethington died on Oct. 16, 2007 at age 42, losing his battle with colon cancer.
“The last four years have been chaos,” Karen said.
