Positive ID made on remians

Authorities confirm identity, but still searching for cause of Sandra Harris' death

By Donna Carman

A mother's worst fears came true last week when she received positive confirmation that her daughter was dead.
Late on the afternoon of Jan. 3, the state medical examiner's office released the news that positive confirmation had been made on the skeletal remains found off Bastin Creek Road Dec. 27. The remains were those of Sandra Jeanette Harris, 30, who had been reported missing in August by her

mother, Frances Harris.
She suspected all along that the remains were Sandy's, but held out hope that it wouldn't be. But now that she knows for sure, Harris is just waiting for closure.
"It's hard, it's very hard, but at least we know for sure," Harris said.

A Yosemite man whose car struck a girl riding a bicycle has been charged in her death.
Derrick Scott Hamilton, 24, was indicted Monday by a Casey County grand jury for reckless homicide in the death of Venessa Kemarly.
Venessa, 14, and a friend, Adrian Lawless, were riding their bicycles on Chestnut Level Road, where Venessa lived, around 11:15 a.m. Aug. 20. That's when Venessa apparently rode out onto KY 837 into the path of Hamilton's 1992 Mercury Topaz. According to reports at the time, Venessa was attempting to cross KY 837 onto Papaw Creek.

Some Jones Park students eagerly gather around various school and other dignitaries as they cut the ribbon on Jones Park Elementary School Thursday evening. An open house drew an estimated 1,000 people.

Three bows hung on a ribbon suspended across a set of risers at Jones Park Elementary Thursday evening.
On the left, a black-and-yellow bow symbolized Middleburg Elementary, while at right, a black-and-white bow represented Garrett Elementary. A larger black-and-Columbia blue bow sat in the middle, showing the coming together of these two schools to form Jones Park.
As school officials and other dignitaries waited patiently behind the barrier to do the symbolic ribbon-cutting to officially dedicate the new school, Superintendent Linda Hatter addressed more than a hundred people gathered in the foyer.

Weddle to stay on child custody case

By Donna Carman

Casey Circuit Judge James G. Weddle is still on the case.
Kentucky Supreme Court Chief Justice Joseph Lambert ruled on Friday that Weddle would not be recused as judge in a child custody case that is currently in Casey Circuit Court.
Although Lambert made the decision on Friday, it was not known until Monday afternoon, a few hours after Arletta Bendschneider - who asked for Weddle's recusal last month - was in court asking for a continuance in the case.
